The churches of Chiloé are entirely constructed of wood. Besides the beauty, impacts the amount of them, because they are not more than 10 kilometers apart from each other. Deciseis churches were declared World Heritage by UNESCO in 2000 and 2001. Churches are an outstanding example of the successful merger between European and indigenous cultural traditions. The mestizo culture resulting from the missionary activities of the Jesuits in 1600 and 1700 and then the Franciscans, has survived intact in the Chiloé Archipelago.
